What is EAP?

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an experiential method of psychotherapy.  It is unique in that horses are incorporated into the therapy session.  Two professionals are involved in the sessions, the psychotherapist and the equine specialist.  These two individuals work together with the horse(s) through various tasks or assignments to assist the client(s) in challenging fears, struggles or other issues.

EAP can also be used to challenge and address a variety of issues such as assertiveness, confidence, attitude, responsibility, teamwork, relationships and communication difficulties.  This modality can also assist in dealing with a number of mental health issues such as addictions, abuse, attention deficit disorder, grief and loss, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety and anger.

Horses are intuitive by nature and are very different from many other types of animals.  They possess a keen sense of hearing, smell, sight as well as the ability to detect safety versus danger. This creates a very sensitive animal that can mirror the client's struggles.

EAP can be used with individuals, families or groups, and in situations such as marriage counseling, leadership training for church staff/groups, and corporate leadership trainings.
